Because “pack your bags” deserves a little flair
One of the things my wife and I love most is planning surprises for each other. We don’t wait for big anniversaries or milestone birthdays. Any excuse will do. Sometimes it’s as simple as slipping a post card under a coffee mug. Other times it’s a full-blown, don’t-ask-any-questions-just-go-along-with-it weekend escape. The reveal is just as much fun as the surprise getaway.
The fun isn’t just in the getaway itself. It’s in how you deliver the surprise. That moment of revelation. The wide-eyed grin. The “wait, seriously?” reaction.
If you’re looking to give your partner a birthday or anniversary they’ll never forget, here are six ways to drop the news that you’re whisking them away. Each one adds a little mischief, mystery, or magic to the reveal.

Revealing the Perfect Surprise Getaway

1. The Old Key Trick: Hide the Hotel Key With a Note
There’s something timeless about a hotel key. Not the bland plastic cards every hotel uses now. I’m talking about the old-school kind. A heavy brass key on a leather fob. The kind that feels like it unlocks adventure.
If you can get your hands on one, it makes a perfect prop. Pair it with a short handwritten note and hide it somewhere your partner will find it. Their purse. Their pillow. Their lunch bag. The note can be as simple as:
“This opens Room 304 at the Getaway Inn. You and I check in at 4 PM.”
Where to find vintage hotel keys:
- eBay and Etsy often have real decommissioned hotel keys for sale. Look for ones with a retro vibe or classic motel branding.
- Antique shops or flea markets sometimes carry them in bins of old keys.
- Find Generic Hotel Type Keys at Amazon
- If you’re staying at a boutique hotel, call ahead and ask if they have a traditional key you can borrow or purchase for the surprise.
Bonus: If you’re feeling crafty, you can even buy a blank key tag and engrave or stamp the hotel name and room number yourself. It doesn’t have to be functional. It’s all about the reveal.

2. Send Them on a Scavenger Hunt
If your partner enjoys puzzles or a bit of a challenge, turn the reveal into a scavenger hunt. It doesn’t have to be complicated. A few clever clues around the house can build suspense before the final “aha” moment.
Each clue can relate to a part of your trip. For example:
- Clue in the bathroom: “Pack your toothbrush, but don’t stay put. Your next clue is where we keep the fruit.”
- Clue in the fruit bowl: “You’ll need energy for your adventure. Now check where we keep the warm sweaters.”
- Clue in the closet: “You won’t need these where we’re going. But in one of the shoes is a clue.”
Let the last clue lead to a packed bag, a printed itinerary, or a postcard from your destination. You could even drop a pin on Google Maps and leave a note saying “See you here in 3 hours.”
Tip: Make the first clue easy. If the first one lands, they’re hooked.

3. Make a Custom Jigsaw Puzzle
This one takes a bit of prep, but it’s worth it. Have a jigsaw puzzle made using a photo or graphic that reveals the destination. It could be a photo of the hotel, a snapshot from Google Street View, or just a simple message like:
“You and me. October 14. Charleston. Be ready at 9 AM.”
Once they put it together, the secret’s out.
Where to make custom puzzles:
- Shutterfly
- PuzzleYou
- [Etsy sellers**] often offer handmade or vintage-style puzzle prints
To make it more fun, you can give them the puzzle in pieces. One envelope per day leading up to the trip. Or wrap it and present it like any other gift. If you’re sneaky, you can even “help” them solve it to watch their reaction in real-time.

4. Have a Celebrity Do the Reveal With a Cameo Video
Want a reveal they’ll never see coming? Hire their favorite celebrity, comedian, athlete, or reality TV star to drop the news in a personalized Cameo video.
For a recent birthday surprise, I solicited the help of Jesse Palmer (Pro Footballer, Bachelorette host, and Holiday Backing Show Fame. I couldn’t be happier with the results.
You write the script. They deliver the surprise.
Example:
“Hey Jane, I heard you’ve been working hard and could use a little break. So guess what? Jim is taking you to Savannah this weekend. Pack your bags. Don’t be late. And yes — this is 100% real.”
Keep it short and punchy. You can play the video at dinner, text it randomly during the day, or “accidentally” leave it open on the TV or laptop.
Tips:
- Be specific in the request. Let the celeb know the occasion, tone, and what to say.
- If your partner has a niche favorite (like the host of a cooking show or a B-list horror movie icon), all the better.
- Bonus points if the celeb connects to the destination somehow — a local sports figure, a chef from the city, etc.
The best part? You’ll both remember the moment you heard the surprise… straight from someone famous.

5. Drop a Clue in the Calendar
This one works best if your partner is the type to check their digital calendar or wall planner regularly. Without saying a word, block off the day (or weekend) with something like:
- “Leave room for adventure”
- “Surprise incoming”
- “Absolutely no plans allowed”
Then act like nothing is out of the ordinary. When they ask about it, play it cool or give vague answers. “You’ll see.” “Just keep it open.” “Don’t make lunch plans.”
As the date gets closer, drop hints. Maybe leave a travel-size sunscreen in the car. Or casually mention how good seafood sounds. The calendar clue plants the seed, and the rest builds anticipation.

6. Countdown Box With Daily Surprises
Build up the suspense with a mini countdown box or advent-style calendar. Give them a small box or envelope to open each day for 3 to 5 days. Each one has a clue — could be a photo, a word, or an item (like sunscreen, hiking socks, or a metro card).
Final day: the big reveal.
Example clue progression:
Final card: “Time’s up. Bags are packed. Let’s go.”
A tiny bottle of SPF with a tag: “You’ll need this.”
A local snack from the destination (New Orleans pralines, Vermont maple candy).
A printed photo of your hotel lobby or a landmark blurred slightly.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to break the bank or plan a month-long journey to pull off a memorable surprise. It’s all in the delivery. Whether it’s a scavenger hunt through your kitchen or a vintage key left on the nightstand, the reveal is the first spark of the adventure. It sets the tone. It says: “I thought this through. I wanted this to feel special.”
And isn’t that what it’s all about?
If you’ve ever delivered a surprise getaway in a creative way, I’d love to hear it. Drop it in the comments. The more ideas, the better — especially with our anniversary right around the corner.
